Pony folks need advice?

I recently became owner of my first pony. The people I bought him from were feeding him around 4lbs (2 ice scoops) of alfalfa 2x a day. He is a bit under 12 hands and probably weighs between 400-450 lbs. They said he had alfalfa hay before without problem.

I am feeding him alfalfa hay 4lbs 2x a day.

Do I also give him monthly psyllium treatment? Should he also get a salt block? A ration balancer?

My horses get the above and individual supplements as needed but I do not know if you do the same thing for ponies???????

My pony and the minis get similar diets, just smaller rations. All horses, ponies, minis, etc. should have free choice access to a salt block or loose salt. If the pony isn't underweight, I wouldn't worry about a ration balancer. I would also try to get a nibble net or slow feeder net so his hay lasts longer, unless he's on pasture.

Is that alfalfa pellets or baled alfalfa? If it is baled alfalfa "separated", the ice scoop must be really large. If it is high quality alfalfa, I would say 8 lb a day is on the high side for a 400 lb pony, unless he is worked.

IMHO ponies are just smaller horses. I treat them the same as my horses.

Ok good then I will do the monthly psyllium and get his salt block.

He WAS on 2 ice scoops, approx 4 lbs of alfalfa pellets 2x a day at last home.

He had been on baled alfalfa previously and tolerated well, since that is what I already feed my others I just converted him from pellets to flakes.

I will try to get a net for him, I was worried as I had read about horses getting tangled in nets and I am not home during the day to supervise.
