Poor Boy...sore feet

Back story:

My horse, Boe, is an OTTB. He's been off the track about 6 months now. Lately we've been having a hard time keeping shoes on him. So, my farrier suggested we give him a month and a half off w/o shoes to let his hoof wall grow out all the (more) brittle parts. He was doing fine up until this week.

He's been barefoot on his left front for 5 weeks, and his right for 3.5 and is now stocking up and not wanting to move. Period. He almost kicked me trying to keep me from cleaning his hind legs. They started to swell a few days ago (I'm thinking b/c he's trying to keep some of his weight off of his front legs), and has been resistant to my attempts at cleaning his hind feet. Today the front legs were puffy too. :o(

So, should I call my farrier and see about getting the shoes back on him? He's in so much pain.
