Foal
Pregnant Rescue, Need Advise

Hello,
We just received an 8-9 year old pregnant Arabian mare. She is very underweight. We have started her on 12% feed and lots of hay. We also started giving her rice meal supp. Is there anything else we can do before the vet is able to see her? There are small patches of hair missing but I am assuming that is from the poor nutrition. They said she was due to foal in July???

What I don't understand is she is registered and so will the baby. Came from a beautiful, well maintained farm/barn. The reason they are practically giving her away is that the other mares were not letting her eat and beating up on her. She seems so sweet and just very grateful that we saved her.

I just paid the $300.00 grabbed her coggins/papers and ran as fast as I could.

It just amazes me what people will let happen.

Anyways, any suggestions on supplements for her and advise on getting her weight back up?

Thank you,

Foal
Just don't give her too much food too fast since she hasn't been getting fed. I know it's hard not to want to plump her up the fastest way possible, but she could colic from doing that. I have been told, however, that they can have as much hay as want. Sorry I am not more helpful on this exact subject. I am sure others will have wonderful answers.

Foal
Thank you!
We have been starting her out small portions 2-3 times a day that way she can't gorge herself. We check her temp and "belly" activity daily.

I'm sure she will be fine, she just looks so thin. You can see her hip bones and ribs. Is it safe to worm her while pregnant?
