Can anyone tell me if you've seen/heard of a prolonged colic? My friend's horse started what seemed to be an impaction colic about two weeks ago on a Friday. On the second day, Saturday, his rectum was palpated. This seemed to cause a rectal tear ie. Blood in his stool and draining from rectum. He was taken to the vets clinic for three days, put on antibiotics and banamine. He had a temp of 102.5 and a pulse rate of 60+ and the vet didn't think he'd make it. On Monday, his temp and pulse were normal and was no longer straining to go to the bathroom and had no blood in his stool or rectum. He went home but went back to straining to go to the bathroom. He is able to poop some but it comes out in small clumps and is soft and wet. When he strains to poop he will urinate a little but this is the only time we've seen him urinate. He is eating (grass, pelleted feed, bran), drinking, does not seem depressed or in distress, his temp stays around 99-100, his gum color seems normal....he doesn't seem like he's all that sick but he is not defecating or urinating properly. I've not been able to find anything online anywhere that sounds anything like what we're seeing with this horse. The vet seems to think he had a rectal tear that is healing and he's just sore. We're beginning to wonder if we're dealing with something other than a colic..maybe a urinary problem. If you have any advice or information, I would sure appreciate some help. Thanks.
