Okay be prepared because I'm a tad bit embarrassed to even ask this because I feel sooo terribly stupid for not know the answer.
Okay so Recently I just got a new mare. I, myself am a gelding person and have owned a majority of geldings for this very reason which is why I would have no particularly good experience with mares in heat and so fourth ..
Today my mare is literally a crazy lunatic. Yesterday she was completely fine and calm as all he**. Today she is nut-zo and rearing on the lead rope with me trying to lead her at the other end. She is running around and being vocal (the vocal and being crazy on the lead could be due to me taking her away from her new buddy in the field..I don't know though, either way I don't see where it is at all acceptable) with her tail slightly up and to the side. I didn't notice If she is peeing alot or winking at all.
So my super stupid questions are-
I was always under the impression that mares bleed when they are in heat. I had a mare once when I was wayyyyy younger(I didn't really learn anything about mares in heat when I had her, I was just told to always clean her legs while she's in heat) and every time she was in heat I always cleaned what I thought was blood off her legs. But I just did some research and found out they don't usually bleed and If they do it could be a serious problem.
But! My BOs old mare use to bleed every time she was in heat and I definitely know it was blood because the horse was a black and white paint with white legs and you could see it staind on her legs and my BO always use to be up in a huffy because she had to scrub her legs for hours trying to get the stains out.
Also, if they don't bleed how do you tell if they are in heat? Just by the sole fact they are being marish?
Any input would be wonderful. And I'm sorry for such a stupid question. I'm just a gelding person!!
