Reaction to Strangles Vaccination

Has anyone ever had their horse react to a strangles vaccination that was given
Intravenously? My horse got his second dose and the next day he just acted sort of different (not excited to see me, was walking stiffly and just overall didn't seem himself). The next day it was worse. Very stiff and then I even noticed that he was VERY sensitive to wear the shot was given and there was a swelling there. I don't know if it was how the shot was given or just a reaction to the shot. After about 5 days he was almost back to normal but it was all quite strange.

Wait, you mean intramuscularly, not intravenously, right?

Did he develop an abscess at the site? If not, consider yourself lucky...

Maybe that's what I meant. Intramuscularly. ;)

There is still a bump there and he is still a little sore but nothing close to how he was 2 days after.

I'm glad your horse is OK.
Yes, years ago when my now 23 year old was young she got horribly sick after the 2nd shot. Then years later she reacted bad to the rhino/flu shot, also after the 2nd shot, which is mainly when reactions will occur, like people allergic to bee stings.
I was advised to never give her those vaccinations again & I haven't. She has never gotten sick from not being vaccinated for those diseases.

Yes, all of that

I'm told the nasal vaccine is much better in that the reaction is little-to-none.

The one time in my life of owning horses that mine got vaccinated for strangles, I had to have the vet back out for one of them. The others in the barn got the punies to one degree or another but the Fella in my avatar ended up with green snot running out of his nose from the vaccine.

My vet was equally as upset as I was that we had to do the vaccines to begin with. We had a huge strangles outbreak in our county that year, thanks to the poor health practices of one Amish community

lethargic, stiff, strangles, swelling, vaccination
