It's been so rainy this Spring that the corral they spend half their day in is caked in mud and muck no matter how well we keep on top of it (their stalls are dry, but we keep the doors open so they can walk around). Their hooves are caked in mud and muck even if we clean them daily.
What are your recommendations for treating and preventing future issues with thrush? Best drying agent, etc?
Biggest issue is that the bigger QH, Zonie, is very difficult to work with when it comes to his feet (he's a rescue and his feet were in awful condition, he was abused, etc etc).
i use straight up bleach. ome people will say it burns but my horses never flinch or anything. its like getting bleach on my fingernails, it doesnt burn me
Anything with 37.5% Copper Napthanate will work - Koppertox and Copper Care are two that I can name off my head that have this percentage. A few applications will clear it right up.
Thrush is caused by horses standing in urine, so keeping them out of that environment will prevent it.
I clean it well, then put some bleach in, let it sit for a few minutes, and rinse it well - putting their foot in a bucket of water for a rinse works great. THEN, I use a treatment meant for cows - there are 2 they are called TODAY and TOMORROW. They come in syringe like dispensers, there are around 10 I think in a box. Put the TOMORROW or TODAY everywhere there is thrush, pack the hoof with cotton, and wrap vet wrap around it to keep the cotton on. duct tape holds the vet wrap to the hoof. change it daily. clears it up FAST.
sorry for the caps, I was just trying to emphasise that those are the names of the treatments. I have used Koppertox, and Thrush Buster, but they don't seem to work as well when you're battling mud too. Good luck.
