Reminder - Rabies shots for VA residents

My vet just released the below statement:

Rabies Alert! A horse has been diagnosed with Rabies in Southern Virginia. Please make sure all of your horses (and cows) are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

Green Broke
When I was at the vet recently-there was word going around of a horse death due to rabies here in CA. So, my mare got her shot that day & when I had them both in for their health certificates a bit later, the gelding got his, too. It was only a $10 shot & I want that peace of mind.

What part of southern Virginia? VA's a big state, and its biggest border is to the south.

I copied and pasted the vets statement. That's all it gave. They probably receive some bulletin and posted it. I'm in the Northern VA area. I figured I would post since many people only get certain shots such as rabies when there are reports in the area. (I get everything always...I'm crazy like that)....

I'm in south central VA, so of course am curious what part of 'southern' VA. Mine have had their rabies vaccination, so it's just morbid curiosity more than anything.

This article is from last month and it's on a mini. I wonder if that's it? It's in Tazwell.

Rabies found in unlikely animal

Tazewell is about 200 miles from where I live.

We had a horse with rabies in my area about 3 years ago. A 2 y/o, who had never been vaccinated. Very sad case.

Here is the latest newsfeed from my vet:

The neurologic form of EHV-1 has been confirmed in a horse in Raliegh, NC. If you've recently had your horse there monitor them and their temperature closely. If travelling to Raleigh or any horse function follow strict biosecurity measures.

(They have a facebook page)

So it's not rabies but EHV-1? Ugh, Raleigh's only about 2 hours from me.

Thanks-I have some friends headed to Florida stopping on NC overnight. Appreciate the reminder to be careful.
