Required Vaccines?

Hey everybody, this year will be my first time vaccinating my horses. They have had vaccinations this past year, but I was never in charge of it... My question is, is what Vaccines MUST you give your horse? I know I am getting coggins. Should I get 5-Way, strangles, tetanus, rabies?! Thanks!

Yes, all of the above. You should just ask your vet, they are up to date on all things related to this can change year to year.

Also, welcome to the forum :)

Yes no maybe, it all depends, coggins test and rabies, are minimums in my book but it depends on the horse and how and where you use him for the rest. My horse crosses state lines and is around other horses, strange horses, community watering holes, so he gets more shots than my old timer did that never left the property. The vets reasoning is the traveler gets everything he will be less likely to bring anything home. I used to get rabies and five way, this year the vet is adding strangles and a flu shot of soem kind because of the travels and group rides. I trust her judgement that's why I pay them. I explain what my horse will be doing for the next year and let them decide.

Shot are sort of like insurance - how much protection do you want? No shots are legally required (here at least). I know some people who vaccinate for everything under the sun for every horse all the time. Others never vaccinate at all. If you tell your vet what you will be doing this year with your horse he should know which ones to give for your situation. To have a coggins test every year is the only health requirement here legally.

My vet said Innovator 6, West Nile and Rabies are a must in this area. We have tons of mosquitos. He never mentioned Tetnus, but it sounds reasonable, going to ask and get one to give mine. She's always rubbing on something and scraping herself.

Tetanus and rabies and coggins are the critical ones

I am going to get 6-Way, Strangles, West Nile, Rabies, Coggins test, Potomac Horse Fever! We will be moving across country soon and I want to give my babies the best care! We also do a lot of showing and competing, so they will be exposed to many horses. Where we are moving is to Nevada and they have lots of wild animals! Thanks for the help!!

IF you take her off the property (or it's a boarding facility) I'd give all possible shots (although there is a discussion here about Strangles, and I decided not to give it this year).

If you keep it on your own property, don't take it off the property, and there are no other horses around then I'd say tetanus, rabies, and encephalomyelitis. Also I'd give botulism if you feed round bales.
