Rock lodged in frog, bleeding
So on Sunday I went for a ride down the dirt roads we have all around here, and everything was as normal can be. Rusty has been barefoot now for about 2-3 years with no problems, ever. Well I was riding home on a paved road and halfway home I heard this weird clicking noise in his foot, so I immediately stopped and checked his foot and sure enough their was a rock lodged into the concaved area besides the frog, and the rock was digging into the frog. I finally got it out and his frog started bleeding, bad. He showed no signs of lameness on the way home, and when I got home I checked it again and I couldnt see anything. You would have never known it was their. I rode again on Monday, at a slow walk, and not to long, and no signs of lameness either, and you still couldnt see where the frog had been injured. No blood, no anything. Now fast forward to today. I checked his feet, everything still looked normal like nothing had even happened and we started out on a ride. About halfway through the ride we were cantering up a slight hill on a dirt road and I could instantly tell something was off when we got to the top. I got off and checked his foot, and sure enough, same foot same spot, the frog was bleeding again. I rode him home and this time he was limping and ***** footing it the whole way home. He is DEFIANTLY sore now. I got home and again it looked like nothing was their, so I rinsed his foot out with cold water and put him in his pasture as it was to dark for anything more. The pressure must have opened up that injury again, and I dont plan on riding him until this is resolved. So, should I poultice him? How do you make a poultice? What do I put in it? Im wondering if that rock puncture is going to cause a abscess? And Ive never heard of frog injuries causing so much discomfort... By all means I will get a vet/farrier out, but I was wondering what you guys thought. Also, he doesnt have thrush, never has.
E v e r y horse is good for something. You dont throw a whole life away just cause he's banged up a little...
