I have just used face paint that you can find around Halloween. It's never bothered my horses and it works really well

It's not the color but what you're using. You'll want something non toxic so face paint or even children's finger paint may work. If your horse is light colored you'll want to test it first to make sure it doesn't stain. Even if it does stain it will come out eventually so it's a matter of if you'll mind or not.

Many online tack shops sell horse safe glitter paint and glitter hoof paint that you can use. Twinkletoes is a popular brand that does both hoof and body paint for horses.
