salt block obsession!

Hi, I'm new here. I rescued two grade horses 2 days ago, and they zeroed in on that salt block, and have virtually licked it down to a nub. It's a mineral block & no doubt they never had one before.

Can this nearly nonstop licking then drinking a ton of water be harmful? I would think they would know when to stop, but maybe not.

Is there a supplement I can feed them to take their attention off the salt? They are on pasture.

If it's a red mineral block, then yes, it could be dangerous. Red mineral blocks contain iodine, which can be harmful in large quantities. I would pull the mineral block out until you have them on a good diet with plenty of vitamins and deworm them, then reintroduce the block.
