Sarcoids.

I have a tb mare, she's 10 year old has never been raced and has two small sarcoids under her belly near her back legs arnt affecting her in anyway and havent bothered her since they apeared havent changed shape or anything, any ideas or suggestions what to do?

Sarcoids are odd and hard to get rid of. They are a non-cancerous tumor. I just used Vecteryn on mine and it eventually fell off. My boy no longer has it on his lip :)

I would say that if they're not changing and don't bother her, I would leave them well alone. They can be very tricky to deal with, and sometimes end up being "irritated" and get worse if people attempt to treat them.

If I were you, I would let them be. They don't pose an aesthetic issue if they're that far under her belly, so I would just keep an eye on them, and if they change in any way, that's when I'd get in contact with the vet.

If they are small and dry just leave them alone. In some cases they just stay that way for long time. I agree with the above poster: if you start messing with them it can get worse, not better.

Georgia, I agree with everyone else, I would not touch them until you have to. I'm not sure if you've seen this thread, but I am in the midst of aggressively treating sarcoids, but only because my mare's body sort of made the decision for us. For months, I had just been watching them since they were staying the same shape/size. Almost overnight, the sarcoid turned into a large, bleeding nodule, so then we began treating.

The "rule of thumb" advice I got from one vet was to leave them alone if they're the size of a pea; if they get to be the size of a grape, it might be time to act. Obviously that would be a judgement call for the owner/vet. Good luck!

There is something I found in my "The Horse.com Magazine" tonight. It's called XXTERRA. It's an herbal paste made to treat sarcoids. It's sold to vets ONLY so if you want some (sold in 1oz and 2oz) then you'll have to contact your vet and have your horse inspected. Then you two can talk from there. Best of luck!
