Schonfelder link to EPSM

My trainer used to breed to the Trekehner stallion Schonfelder and had a total of 17 Schonfelder horses in her barn. She has one left who is one of the last Schonfelders, sired before he died in 2000. Within the last year he has developed a rather severe case of PSSM/EPSM which does not seem to be improving all that much with the diet. The diet might make his walk sound, but he is still off in the other gaits. Looking back she said that about half of the Schonfelders had similar problems (but less severe). All starting with not being able or having a hard time holding leads behind. She said that all the ones that were good were out of two 'Raise a Native' bred Thoroughbred mares.
Reading up on it, it seems to be genetic and I was just wondering if anyone else has had or heard of a Schonfelder first or even second generation that has these problems?

I don't know the stallion and am not involved in warmbloods, but there are at least two varieties of EPSM, both of which have a simple genetic test through the University of Minnesota. And there are related conditions, too. Are we positive that we're dealing with EPSM?

We have ruled out most everything else. The test for EPSM is a muscle biopsy and we have not done that yet.

There's also RER, which has similar symptoms, and HYPP, but that seems unlikely to impossible in a warmblood.

There's a blood test for at least one type--last I'd read, I thought they were able to test for both genes via blood / hair follicles, but maybe that's not right. Recent advances in PSSM genetic testing - CVM - UMEC, University of Minnesota
