Scratches/swollen.... Should I ride?

Okay so my horse was diagnosed with Scratches aka mud fever on Monday the 21st of March, and he was put on 1 gm bute paste daily, and two scoops of Uniprim as an antibiotic. I also am scrubbing his legs with betadine as the vet recommended. It's not really getting better... :(

He's not lame and there is no heat in his legs. Just there seems to be fluid still in his back legs, and they are swollen maybe an inch.

I have a mounted meeting on Sunday the 27th for pony club and I need to know if I should ride him for it. It would involve a 10 min trailer ride to the barn and back, and then an hour lesson, mainly dressage. As I said before, he's not lame and there's no heat. Just swollen a little. And it doesn't get worse with work. (Been lunging him a little just so stretch his legs.)

Kept telling myself I wouldn't ride til the swelling came down, but it's getting closer to the MM and I need to tell the lady who is hauling me and another horse what I'm doing.

What would you do? :(

I wouldn't ride, personally. Especially since it's not getting better. You can always call your vet and ask, phone calls are free.

I would talk to your vet.. Betadine is a pretty harsh thing to be treating scretches with as it actually ******s healing. Ask if there is a cream you can use (preferable water based - my vet's stuff when mixed up is pink and contains powerful antibiotics, antifungals and other fun stuff, but is quite gentle and allows healing) and you should be cleaning it with a little bit of chlorhexadine and water if it gets dirty, otherwise just using the cream because we want to keep it as dry as possible. Oral antibiotics and bute are good however if the legs are still swollen I would bump him up to 1g of bute twice a daay orally. I would also say to wrap the legs in stable bandages when he is stalled and keep him moving as much as possible to drain the adema. Personally for me if the horse does not have a temp, is not showing signs of discomfort and the scratches are not open and bloody I see no reason why he can't be ridden within reason. I probably wouldn't take him for a long lesson or to a comp, but a short ride once a day can actually serve to increase bloodflow and healing to the site.

Good luck!

My one horse gets scratches every year. I use MTG on his legs and the scratches heal up pretty quick. I don`t really see why you can`t ride if their not swollen. My horse moves perfectly fine when he`s having his `out breaks`.
