As for what you should carry -- carry what you feel comfortable with. No sense in bringing a long a gun that you can't use.

Ryle, I forgot about handguns. In Canada it is such a PIA to get a handgun, I usually just discount them. Plus you have to get a permit to transport and double locks and blah, blah, blah... Legally you'd probably even have a fight to be allowed to take the handgun on a trail ride with you here, despite the valid protection required when in the bush near bears, wolves, coyotes and cougars. Canada! Baaaaa! Baaaa! Can you hear the sheep calling?

Man, I hate these friggin' gun laws. Had a bear in the yard 20 feet from the barn. By the time I had found the right key for the right gun, unlocked the gun and unlocked the ammunition, loaded up -- well, the bear just wandered off. Good thing she wasn't after anything. From here on in, during bear season, the gun stays out. That was just BS that day. I was sooo angry.

Yeah around here EVERYONE has a gun.. permit or not... usually kids get their first gun at 5 or six and their first deer much earlier... I don't think I know a single person who has a permit for any gun they have... are there even permits required for 22s in Missouri?

My boyfriend is from Missouri, and he's told me everyone has guns there... crazy to me! Hahaha but I didn't grow up around them so they terrify me. Good post though, I learned something. :)

Here's a brief on gun laws in Missouri but you might want to check to see if there have been changes since this was written.
Missouri Gun Laws - What are the Gun Laws in Missouri?

I grew up with guns as well. My father made me carry one when I went out riding all night in the summer. Plus we had them at home and I made use of one when some men drove up during the day and started trying to load my horses in their trailer.

You can also contact local law enforcement to destroy an injured animal. Not their favorite thing to do but they will do it in an emergency.

Great thread. Everyone should know basic first aid for any pet and carry a kit or other necessities for the terrain they are going to be in. Always antisepate the worst when packing for trails and hope none of them actually happen.

Amen on the everyone in Mo. Has a gun!!! LOL I was born and raised in MO. And was hunting by the time I turned 10.

Interesting article, but I have to wonder why they consider the cost "HIGH" for barbituate death. I've had many horses put down over the years and not once has my vet charged me for it.

Now burial is a different story. That does cost a few $$$.
