Sharing saddle pad?

Not sure this should be under the health topic or grooming topic.

I am hoping the more experienced folks can help me out. I posted on another thread about a horrible experience I had last week with looking at a couple of horses to lease. They were in such bad shape, we decided to not to even try. I even ended up calling Animal Control.

BUT....this was after my saddle pad was already on one of the horses. The owner told me she had rain rot and that she gets it every year. I didn't realize until after we got home that I shouldn't have had my saddle pad on her because rain rot can be passed from horse to horse...right? And who knows if was even rain rot...it could have been something else even worse because the owner was obviously not taking care of her horses.

I have a lesson this weekend and do not want to pass anything nasty onto my lesson horse. The saddle pad has been stored in a cool, dry place since last week. What is the best way to sterilize it? It won't fit in my washer...it is a thick western pad.

Woolite and a garden hose should do it. Someone recently suggested one of those do-it-yourself car washers that have stalls and a water/soap wand. Just use your own Woolite instead of the car wash soap.

When I go to look at a new horse, I'll use my saddle, but their pad and their bridle.

I'm not arguing with you, I'm just explaining why I'm right.

All I know is ACV is good for when your washing saddle pads, but I think the only thing it does is get the hair off it :)

Horses are scared of two things... Things that move and things that don't.

My regular cinch is a mohair Smart Cinch but I use a neoprene cinch when looking at a new horse so I can wash it off.

I have horses you would not be able to use neoprene on.

All of my horses have their own headstall, bit, saddle pad and cinch.

You need to remember that these are not my horses, I have no idea if I'm going to buy him, and the amount of riding while trying him will be minimal compared to my regular rides.

All my personal horses have their own headstall/bit as well but I use the same 1" 5 Star pad, and cinch for all of them.
