Found out today someone else's horse is doing it too, which makes me feel better. I just worry her summer coat isn't in yet, because a couple of years ago a lot of people in the area were having problems with that thanks to a wacky temp change.

I'm in SoCal and we've had temps in the 70's and 80's for the last couple weeks and I noticed my horse is starting to shed a little. We're still dropping into the 40's at night and most of our winter is still ahead so he better hang onto that hair! At least he's on the plump side of weight!

My horses are not shedding but most of them grew only half of a winter coat (Except for my 25 year old mare who went double over kill...) This winter has been nuts (and FANTASTIC!) We've only gotten about 6" total of snow so far when last year was 59"... Northern Michigan is typically a high in the twenties (F) with several days that don't reach 10* and nights well in the negatives for January... and it has been 40*. My horses are sweating! If it continues like this threw the month I expect to have some pretty sheddy horses in February rather than the typical April.

Anyway, in your case I do not think that a little shedding is anything to worry about.

This post has made me feel better! I am in NC, too, on the coast. It has been very warm here all winter. My Paint gelding's hair has been falling out this week and it had me a little worried, but didn't see anything else wrong with him. I wondered if he could be shedding, but thought it was too early. But he is my first horse, and I don't really know anything about shedding!
