Alright, so i live in York, PA and I have an 8 year old QH/Morgan mare. I was wondering what shots you think I should give this spring??
Back in November she got the Influenza, Rhino and Tetanus shots. I have a paper with different shots on it and when they should be given so, I was thinking I should give her the Encephalomyelitis(EEE, WEE, VEE), renewing her Influenza, Potomac horse fever, rabies, and west nile virus.
Are there any other I should give or any that you don't think I REALLY need to give to her??
I am not sure about giving the Influenza again, I'm not sure it is really necessary. Also, just a side note to add, I am in Ohio and we normally give the west nile shot at the beginning of spring (April) and late fall (August) when the mosquitoes are really bad here. I'm not sure how bad they get there, but might be something to keep in mind.
Alright, thanks. We have a decent amount of mosquitos but not very much. I was just thinking of giving the influenza for the spring and then wait until fall-ish to give it again just to make sure she is covered. I probably will wait until the end of the month, beginning of April to give any of the shots because we have to buy all this other stuff for her and I have shows to do and stuff that also take up money.
There is no reason to give VEE in PA. It's only recommended in states that border on Mexico or for horses that will be travelling to Mexico or way down in the southern US.
If you are in a situation that you should be boostering Influenza then you should be boostering Rhino as well. How often you booster these two depends on the situation your horse is kept in, his use and the type of vaccine you used. For boarding, competition or trail horses that travel regularly these two vaccines may be recommended as often as every 3-4 months because the effectiveness of the vaccines is only about that long. With the newer vaccine, you may only need to vaccinate every 6 months but you should discuss these two vaccines with your vet.
WNV, EEE and WEE vaccines should be given at least 2 weeks prior to the onset of mosquito season so that the body has time to build up antibodies after vaccination.
