My two year old gelding came in the other day lame, I picked his hoofs out and he was fine again. So I didn't think much of it. But he was digging his bed up. I put it down to rats in his bed, because most horses do it on the yard around this time and he was doing it in the same place. Yesterday he seemed off, not like himself, but he showed no obvious signs of being sick and I couldn't call my vet and say "my horse is digging his bed and looks off?" They'd think I'm taking the p!ss!
I've been down tonight and he's dug the entire front of his bed up. He hasn't touched his haylage, he's eaten his hard feed and drank at least half of his water. So I get him in and I touched his front right leg, and he starts pawing the ground and trying to move away from me. I do the same on the other side and he's stays still.
He was obviously hurting, he had a small cut under there from a week ago, buts it's scanned over and I don't think that's causing the pain, luckily someone on my yard had Bute and I've putten half in his tea and half in his breakfast.
I've given the yard manager permission to turn him out. Turnout ends Sunday anyway. I just think he's better moving around rather than stood in one place all day? Should I message her and ask her to keep him in or leave him out??
