Shoulder Stiffness

Hi guys!

I have a question about my 18 yr old quarter horse that has recently developed some stiffness in his right shoulder. However, he only exhibits this stiffness in the indoor arena. When riding in the indoor, he does not seem stiff at a walk, but at a trot it is quite noticeable, and he refuses to keep a right lead canter for more than a few steps. While riding him in the outdoor ring or hacking him in the back pasture, he's perfect - no stiffness, perfect canter on both leads, perfect trot.

The indoor ring is a sand/clay ring while the outdoor is a limestone ring..does that make a difference? I've tried using Absorbine on his leg and shoulder but that hasn't seemed to make any change. I do not have enough money to have a chiropractor out. Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable in the indoor (stretching, more liniment) or does it seem like just a footing issue?

It does seem like that from what you've said.

Is the indoor ring smaller? That could also make a difference.

Footing could make a difference, but my question is, when you know horse is lame at certain gaits, why are you asking for them in area he is having trouble in?

And honestly? I'd be staying off of him anyway, as he could be masking the problem better when in outdoor/larger setting, different footing.

Keep riding him, and he may be lame/stiff everywhere.

Horses make me a better person.
