I was out riding and I came across 2 stallions shock: I know, not good on a flirty mare haha) and they came trotting over, and they had their whole muzzels covered in raw sores. I'll attatch some images, but I was wondering what the h3ll it could be!? Their field... wasn't in the best condition, but there was nothing along the lines of poisinous plants or trees around... Perhaps some buttercups, nettles and little blue flowers. But I know the nettles and little blue plants don't do this. and there was planty of grass for these boys. It almost looked like really bad mud fever all over their noses, or real bad ezcema in humans.
The images are bad quality as there from my phone :?, but the sores were scabby and the skin was broken and red under the scabby bits.
It looks like what we know locally as "Buttercup Burn". It can be quite nasty, there's a toxin in buttercups that can irritate sensitive skin, so when the horse is foraging in grass, it is a prime target.
I've linked you a Horse and Hound article, apparently this year has been a bumper one for buttercup burn due to the wet weather we've had this "summer".
Thanks Indie! When I first saw it I was like 'OMG it has the PLAGUE don't touch it Alli!' But I reasoned it would be something irritating his muzzel after I got over the initial shock haha but damn I wish I could treat the poor boyz! But I don't even know the owners to be able to allert them to the boys' noses :S
It can look quite horrendous!! It is a shame that you don't know who they belong to, can you do some investigating? Luckily, although it'll be really irritating, it shouldn't cause anything serious if it is Buttercup Burn, and will hopefully go once the buttercup season is over
It could also be a lovely case of sunburn as it looks to only be in the pink areas.
My lad has to have facto 50 suncream applied to his face 4 or 5 times a day to prevent sunburn. (and to under his tail as it is white and he managed to sunburn there too)
When I got one of my mares she had sunburn even worse than that. Sunburn on sunburn. Her whole muzzle & lips were solid scabs, swollen & painful. Her one white eyelid was also scabbed. They cleared up quickly with proper care.
