Spirulina for allergies?

Has anyone successfully used spirulina for allergies? My horse Yankee is allergic ot something - we think grass since he was mildly itchy and headshaking over the winter, but is much worse now, so I need to help him. I used MTG and other topicals to no effect last year. Vet suggests Hydroxizine but she says it's $100.00 - which sounds awfully expensive - waiting for her to reply back with how long that much drug might last.

Gawd, if it's not one thing, it's another. Well, we just have to get through the next two summers, then he'll be in the desert and seasonal allergies (the vet thinks it's probably grass as he had symptoms in the winter but very mild) shouldn't be a problem.

Looking for any suggestions to help him - I'm pretty sure the headshaking is due to allergies, since it has definitely increased at the same time he's losing more of his tail.
