Spring and Fall shots given together????

I just got a new 1 yr old filly, I was told she was utd on shots but the owner lied about a few other things so I don't believe she is. There's no proof b/c she said she gave her the shots herself, not the vet. I talked to a vet and the vet said it was ok to give Spring and Fall shots together??? Does this make sense or do I need a second opinion?? Then why is it that they don't give fall and spring shots together ALL the time??? Would it kill my filly if I gave her both of them together??? Please let me know

The biggest thing with shots in general is potential allergic reactions. I would follow my vet's advice, but make sure he tells you the risks and potential reactions of each vaccine to look for just in case, and many times they will spread the shots out over a few weeks so that if there is a reaction, you'll know which one was the problem.

If I was unsure I would treat her as if she had never had any shots at all

The fall shots are NORMALLY a booster on the spring shots so there should not be a problem ... give her one roun dof shots wait I think it is 30 days and give the next round....

Also follow the AAEP guide to what vaccines a horse in your area needs... if you are going into winter no need to do West Nile at this point ...

Yeah, I also think since you're unsure if she's had any, go along as if she never did. :) That's the best thing to do. I think she'll be fine though.

My horses (actually all of my animals...) only get shots once a year. Every spring. And the vet should know and be honest if they can't be given at the same time..Always good to get a second opinion though if you are unsure! So good job! It sounds as though the consensus from here is that it is okay too.

I don't see why you couldn't give them all at once. Provided, of course, your horse is in good health - if she is currently unwell, live virus vaccines can make them sick as their body cannot build immunity to the organism they are being injected with. I'm not sure whether the vaccines your giving are live virus vaccines or not - I know more about people vaccines than horse vaccines :-/

But I'm sure it will be fine. Vaccines nowdays are very safe.

"Spring" & "fall" shots aren't really a specific designation, it's just when you most often need to give boosters. You will generally booster for the same things once to 4 times a year, most commonly in the spring and fall.

EEE, WEE, WNV should all be given in the spring at least 2 weeks prior to when mosquitos start appearing, but in some areas they are also boostered again in the fall due to a long mosquito season. Other than these vaccines there are none that "have to be given" at any particular time of year.

Influenza and Rhino vaccines should be given 2-4 times a year depending on the use/exposure of the horse. Previously and still to some degree vets will give these vaccines at least once a year in horses that don't get exposed to ANY outside horses--they generally do this in the fall. But horses that board, trail ride, show, go to outside trainers, go to breeding farms, etc should be boostered at least twice a year and often 3-4 times a year depending on the type of vaccine that is used. This is because these vaccines only provide protection for a few months (again the length of time that they are effective depends on which vaccine you use).

Strangles (when recommended), rabies, tetanus, etc all can be given whenever---it just depends on convenience and when the horse will be in "at risk" situations.

It is common to give "spring and fall shots" (meaning those that people have considered spring shots--EEE, WEE, WNV, Tetanus and fall shots--Influenza and Rhino) all together in foals/weanlings and yearlings as they have to have a series of each vaccine just like puppies and kids. They don't just get each vaccine once. And you can also see adult horses get "spring and fall shots" at the same time if they are competition horses or in areas where the mosquito season is long because they are at risk for the resp. Diseases (rhino, influenza) so need regular boosters and/or they get boosters against EEE, WEE, WNV in the fall to help keep their immunity high all year round.
