Stallion to Mare disease...

I am sorry if there is already a thread about this (please direct me to it if there is one)
I may sound like a complete idiot, but I was told by a "friend" that their mare and unborn foal died from a disease (or something) caught from the stallion. I am sure that the mare may have caught some sort of STD or something, but to kill both the mare and the unborn foal? Is this at all correct?

Thanks in advance.

Trained
There was something in Kentucky last year I think that was breeding related. Look at thehorse.com -- maybe it was there I saw it.
