stiff shoulders?

Hey guys I have a 5 year old QH that has very stiff shoulders. When the farrier comes out and does his hooves he has a hard time stretching his leg to the front and flinches back. My farrier was out this last time and told me to start doing some stretches with him every day or every other day and they have helped quite a bit. But I was thinking maybe about having a chiropractor or an equine massage therapist come out and look at him. I'm just not sure what one. What do you guys think?

I have had a lot of success with equine massage. It gets all the knots worked out and frees up the horse to move again. I'd start there and then start a daily stretching program so he doesn't stiffen up again. If you do get him a massage, see if you can pick up a few pointers on how to do some techniques yourself. I learned enough to where I can identify knots and in most cases work them out myself. It really seems to help my horse a lot.

I would follow your farrier's advice and do some stretching. I stretch a couple of my horses before every ride and they warm up much better.

I have used massage and chior work with good results as well. My chiro is a licensed vet. She does accupuncture along with the chiropractic work. She will tell me if follow up massage work would be beneficial or not.
