Stiffness in Young Horse??

I bought my 4 yr old QH a year ago and last winter he had been stiff on and off. Last winter his back hawks were hot off and on. I had them exray'd and the vet said it could just be growing pains. In the spring he went to training, the trainer didn't think he was stiff. I rode him all summer with a new saddle - he didn't seem stiff. In October when the ground froze we took his shoes off for the winter. He went lame really bad so we had to put special rubber sole shoes on him. I left him alone for one month letting him heal. So when I started to ride him in mid Dec. his back seems really sore and he trots very uncomfortably under saddle. I put an english saddle on him and he did the same thing. His withers and back have hot spots off and on. Would the lameness in Oct/Nov cause his back pain? If yes, do I let him sit for another month? Also his back hawks are hot again off and on.

Get a qualified Bak Man (sorry don't know accurate profession name ) out to check his back over. A great deal of lameness can be caused from having a sore back as the horse compensates for the pain. Get his back checked over, then get a qualified saddler to properly fit your saddle, and get him to work with the Back Man if possible, and see where that leaves you. It could be worth getting the Back Man out when the horse is sore, and after a week or so of rest when he isn't so sore and see what conclusions he can draw from this also.
