Stifle problems HELP

Ok my palomino is a rescue ok she was chaind to a tree in her front yard with about 10ft of slack :'( she was still a baby and I hope you know that if a filly don't get the nutrients she needs her bones don't develop right that's just what happend to her. Then her stifle joints messed up and we can't ride her and now we have to build the muscles in her back legs so the vet can blister the stifles to get her back to normal its so sad ok wen she lays down and tries to get back up her back legs lock up. She also can't lope or else she falls down and I really mean fall not stumble FALL on her chest........this happens to race horses all the time. Does anyone have any advise or good excersizes that might help????

I've never seen that (falling due to locking stifles) with a racehorse before, but it's true that they often have stifle problems. Did your vet tell you what he thinks is actually wrong with the stifle? Is it the ligament or the patella - like bone or a combo? How does he want to blister it? There can be external or internal blisters, the use of which depends on what is actually wrong with the joint. A good chiropractor can help for sure. Without knowing what the actual diagnosis is, it might be kind of hard to get/give the right advice. All I can tell you is that when we had horses with stifle problems, we used chiropractic, and did injections of Hi-50 with 1cc of cortisone to cool the joint. After several days passed we would do an external blister for a few days and continue with the chiro.

Ok vet said she stretched the ligiments on both legs and the hips had like 3 inches diffrence on the top where one was higher than the other he wants to us to excersize her to build up muscle so he can do an internal blister. He's been treating her with an injection to numb and cool her.

I was riding an eight year old QH gelding yesterday, loping in a big circle to the right, when his stifle locked up and he went down, hard. He just fell out from under me. Thankfully, neither of us was injured but I'm wondering whether or not this horse will ever be safe to ride at a canter. I'm leasing him and the owner says this has happened before and he just needs more conditioning but I'm not totally convinced. I've been riding for over 40 years and I've never had a horse just collapse like that.

Im not really following this all here. If a horse is tied to a tree and not moving, she would be underdeveloped, lacking of muscle and conditioning, etc. if she stretched theses muscles it would have been from being overworked. And if its a muscle problem, why is he injecting the joint? And why does he want to do an internal blister? Internal blisters take away soreness out of mucles. If she was tied to a tree her problem would be that she doesnt HAVE any muscle. Im just not following much of how this makes sense.

And no, this doesnt happen with racehorses a lot. They do get sore on their stifles, but it doesnt cause them to fall down or anything like that.

I had a 3 year old Hanoverian lock his stifle at the canter and fall on me when I was backing him, he has since had his stifles injected and is showing fourth level dressage without a problem. He had always lived outside before he was imported and had daily turnout once he got here. Locking stifles can happen to any growing horse.
The problem is that the more they lock the more they lock. If it ever locks while she's standing up, BACK her up, don't let her walk forward and "Pop" it.
If you do any sort of work with her, make it straight lines, don't lunger her on a circle. I was told by a vet that driving a horse in a straight line either through the snow or with a small ammount of weight would help. I would ask the vet specifically what he suggests you do to make the muscle stronger.

i just wanted to explain that this is because the stifle is used the most when turning. This is why racehorses get sore stifles, they typically race in a circle, not a strait line

I would ask the vet to recomend an exercise regime for her. Of the top of my head it would seem sensible to try for an equine pool ( do you have insurance- I bet that's pricey) or sandtrack, but without knowing how unfit her muscle tone is its difficult to advise; you wouldnt want to give her too much too soon. If she has trouble getting up she could have stretched her ligiments that way in struggling, or it could be an old untreated injury that has caused the musclature to foreshorten. I think the best you could do is just give the vet a call and ask what they recomend as the most effective exercise regime for her; you just wouldnt want to make her problems worse by doing the wrong thing with best intentions. I hope it all comes right for her and you.
