    Stormy has a cough

Stormy has a cough.I believe she had a cold a few weeks ago as she did have some nasal discharge so we put her in the pipe stall and monitored her just incase it was something else. Anyways, her nose is free of discharge and her eyes are clear and she is alert but she still has this cough once in awhile. Especially when she runs and then stops...I didn't hear her cough yesterday and it's becoming less noticable but should I just let it take it's course or should I take her to the vet? I took her temp and it's normal.

One of the lesson horses at our barn was doing that too. He coughs when he works hard from the dust. It's only in the winter when it's cold and dry out and he's riding in the arena. I would just moniter it for a little while but if it starts getting really bad you may want to consider calling up your vet and getting their opinion. Hope this helps!

As always.. I would call the vet and see what he/she would say, a phone call is free! It could be the beginning signs of a respiratory disease, and I would keep your horse out of dusty areas and monitor it, if it doesn't go away in a couple weeks, have your vet come out, it may be serious, but if it does go away, it was probably just a "cold".

Lacey gets a cough sometimes. I've found that if the dryness of the air is causing it, she'll cough sporadically and it won't be always following movement. Like, sometimes she'll just start coughing randomly and then stop for no apparent reason. This kind of coughing usually happens during the summer when we spend time at high elevations (I call it her "summer cough").

The other reason I've found that she gets a cough is when she's overweight. If she's a fatty and not fit, she'll start coughing immediately following any sort of exercise and not cough at random times. If I get her fit and get a little weight off her, the cough magically disappears.

Of course, if it gets worse or nasal discharge reappears, call your vet but I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't get worse and she has no other symptoms. And like Casey said, a call is free so you could always call the vet and see what they think. :)

I will prob call the vet. I was thinking it might be because of the dry winter air. It happens randomly but seems perfectly fine. She is in open pasture. I do not stall my horses at this time and probably won't so no dust as it's mud right now.I will call my vet on Monday. Thanks.

Yes they can, they just aren't the same as our colds, and technically shouldn't be called colds, but they can still get coughs and runny noses, which in our case is what we would call a cold...

The bad thing is when an animal gets a "cold" it can turn into bad stuff quick, I lost a cat from a "cold" I had even took him to the vet the started him on antibiotics, maybe they were not strong enough or right type over the weekend it turned into pneumonia and he died, all this happened within 5 days of getting this kitty. He was really old and fat but still I do not take chances with "colds" anymore, Not sure about horses and "colds" though I have never had a horse with one...yet

Thanks Move. I will defiently be calling the vet tomorrow when his office is open. I don't want Stormy to have to deal with this cough. I read it can be a seasonal thing but also it can be the start of getting COPD or some respitory disease :/ Hopefully it isn't anything but I don't want to take anymore chances as I am obviously concerned at this point.
