strange lump on new mare

My new mare arrived sunday evening, she was a little stressed to start with but seems to have settled in nicely now. While I was grooming her I noticed a lump on her butt, just next to her tail. Its pretty big, almost the size of my fist but doesnt stick out much. Its not hard, and doesnt feel like fluid it just feels like muscle.. I didnt notice it when I went to view her a week ago, and didnt notice it while we were loading her on sunday but I can't say I payed much attention.. any idea what it could be? Also it doesnt seem to bother her in anyway, I spent a good while poking and prodding at it and got no reaction from her, its just worrying me a little..

a picture would be really helpful

It could be a reaction to a bug bite,
A hematoma (bruise from rubbing or something?)
Any number of things

I don't have a picture yet no, I can probably get one today though. I did notice a tiny scab on the lower half of the lump, so im leaning towards a bug bite reaction, im just going up the yard now so i'll check it again and see if its gone down at all, if its still there i'll get a picture

I know of two horses that have lumps, both different places and sizes. They are both school horses and it doesn't bother them at all - yours sounds pretty similar, just a muscle. I'm no expert, though, so don't hold me on it. Although it might be, like you said, some kind of bite.

That comment is what made me believe it was a muscle. It does look like one in the picture.

It doesnt have to be on both sides for it to me a muscle.

yeah it did feel like muscle the first day I noticed it, but it has now gone kinda squishy just like swelling. I put the cold hose on it for a short while yesterday to see if it helped it go down a little, but I don't think it did. I've spoken to her old owner & she told me she is extremely sensitive & thin skinned so she reacts badly to insect bites. Im hoping it is just that..
