Ive recently noticed that my horses' noses seem to be gettin a little sun burned- not terrible, just kind of pink. I was wondering if i have to find some kind of special horse sun screen or just use the human stuff? Or is there something esle i should try? Posted via Mobile Device
There was a horse out at our barn that had the same problem (only his entire face would sunburn to the point of chaffing skin and blisters). Since he had no owners we just got regular human sunscreen and put it on his face. I used nothing that had any quartizone or neosporin in it because those (imo) can cause many problems in horses and cats. Worked like a charm and he was perfectly fine, better yet, didn't cost me an arm and a leg!
If the chaffing isn't bad from over exposure then I have used the NO-AD brand at Wal-Mart, super cheap.
If the chaffing is bad I use the Equate Wal-Mart brand of Desitin diaper rash cream for a couple of days to get the scabs off and protect the fresh pink skin with the NO-AD sunscreen.
We have always used No-Ad as well. Works like a charm and doesnt burn when applied if the skin is already burnt. My mom's horse/ my new horse has always had a problem with the tip of his nose where his blaze ends getting sun burnt. That the only kind I buy for us humans too!
Our pony has a pink snip on her nose too. Previous owner used a zinc based sunscreen, but I'm wondering about a fly mask with a nose piece? What are they like to use?
i just bought some from the dollar store, made for kids spf 45 . couple of squirts and it seems to work. plus had to use it on my sheeps back, she burns after being clipped and i have to chase her around the pen spraying her.
My boy has a bright pink nose and pink around his eyes, and he burns really easily. The full fly mask has kept him from being burned.
Before I got the full mask I used baby sunscreen on him, but he was not happy about the smell.
