New gelding again...he sorta came in bad shape good body weight but was just left in the pasture to burn! He has a beautiful white blaze and has small bumps on his nose I'm guessing from a sunburn not treated. Now I know how to prevent sunburns but I'm not sure how to doctor one that's already burnt. So what would I use to heal his nose? Thanks in advance!
Preparation H..... reduces swelling and pain.
You can slather it on and as it is thick it can also help prevent the sun exposure causing the burn...
We use 50+ baby sunblock on friends horses faces who have no pigmentation, pink skin around the eye as they are Apps.
Baby sunblock won't burn the eye if it should touch it....
Also use zinc oxide {comes in clear now too}....
:runninghorse2:....
It's a powder, but stays on skin surprisingly well (I have to really scrub with soap to get it off my hands). It's dry, so I don't have to put on cream or paste and find his nose has turned brown from rolling around in the sand. In fact, his pink nose is nice and white so I even use it at shows. It also lasts forever! Easy to apply, haven't had a sunburn all summer and we've had a scorcher of a summer so far. I love it.
Thanks for all the help! I actually picked up some diaper rash cream with 40% zinc oxide this morning and applied it to his rough and bumpy nose put him in his stall and came back this evening and his nose was as soft as a baby's behind!! Worked in less than 8 hours ohh I'm so happy!!
For prevention I bought baby sunscreen 50spf but I live in Memphis where it's been hotter than crap!! So he's stalled during the day with two big fans and let out at night so I'm not to worried about him getting sunburnt under my care as his new owner. Thanks for the great advice!
That's what I do as well. Stalled during the day and mine have fans as well. I also put spf 100 on the pink skin, and cover with a full nose fly mask.....
It's hot in Chattanooga too....
