I have been putting my horse Buzz on black sunflower seeds to help with his condition (thanks sarahver) and they have been working. The place I was buying them from has run out of stock but they have a different type black and white ones which have less fat should I buy them or will they do nothing because it was the fat I wanted.... I probably wouldnt buy the striped ones, they have thicker harder shells that make digesting them harder. How long until the feed store get them in again? If its only a few days i'd just wait, otherwise have you tried other stores?
If you can't find the plain black sunflowers you could try "no grain"
Its just black sunflower that have been cracked mixed with minerals/vitamins. It might do until you can get the plain sunflowers
Striped sunflower seeds can cause colic. Do NOT buy them. Just go to walmart and buy some black oil seeds, or tractor supply. Just be sure they do not have "bird kote" on them. It's a vitamin spray that isn't the best for horses.
Or better yet, buy some flax meal or "omega horseshine." It has more omega 3s than BOSS. Veggie or Canola oil doesn't have any Omega 3 fatty acids. It's all Omega 6s.
