What's a good "all purpose" supplement to feed a horse who is active but is an easy keeper, and besides her hay, only gets about a handful of grain twice a day? She doesn't need more grain than that, but I want to make sure she's still getting all the vitamins and minerals she needs. She has a free choice red mineral block in her stall that she loves, and she's on a hoof supplement, but what's a good "all purpose" or general supplement I could feed her to make up the rest of what she needs?

What about a joint and tendon supplement? I'm going to be putting my horse on Smartflex 1 and smarttendon. I think there was one that actually combined the two..

I like a ration balancer like Purina Equilizer. It covers all the bases, is in pellet form and can be top dressed. Our vets suggested it as a good product, and it had been great for us. Plus a large bag is about $23 here, so it is economical as well. It's great for an easy keeper, our mini gets only the equilizer and does very well on it!

Smartpak makes Easykeeper Supplements (like multivitamins)mto ensure horses take in all the necessary vitamins/minerals when they're not getting the recommended amounts of grain. That would probably be a good option for her :)

I would check these two for her:
SmartVite Performance Grass Pellets from SmartPak Equine
Or
SmartVite Mare Grass Pellets from SmartPak Equine

^ These are for horses on a grass hay. They also have supps for horses on alfalfa hay, if that's what she eats.

I feed my horses a balanced mineral supplement (meaning balanced for the area I live in). Ie. I live in a selenium deficient area, so there is selenium in the feed.
If your horse really needs calcium, kelp supplements are good.
Any of this other stuff I personally don't think does anything. My horse has been on hay, minerals and water for two years with no problems. He travels all over, with all different horses and has been in some pretty stressful situations w/o any adverse effects.

And PS. Don't trust anything a feed company says. Talk to your vet, get a fecal sample and get an equine nutritionist to help you make a feed program.

If Sandie is an easy keeper, I would go to Buckeye's product called "Safe N Easy" it is a great pelleted feed that has alot of Vitamins and Minerals in it to ensure that Sandie is getting all that she needs in her diet.

Alot of people are shocked to find out that their horses aren't getting the suffient amount of Vits and Mins in their feeding programs.

I also recommend SmartPak - I love their products and Nelson is currently on their monthly smartpak regime. He's doing quite well on their suppliments, and I am quite pleased with the results.

Call them, and explain to the Consultant exactly what you said to us, and describe your mare and your work load to them - and they will point you into the right direction. They are very educated on what products they sell, and they'd be very helpful.

For example, I was looking at all their Digestive Aid suppliments, that also work to heal degestive tracts, ulcers and tummy lining - so I was going to go with a product I thought would help. But after talking to the Consultant on the phone, she said "no" because that product doesn't heal and mend and protect - so they pointed me to 2 suppliments that they have that does what Nelson needed after having that massive colic.

So - the Consultants are very informative and very helpful. Give smartpak a shout. And it doesn't mean you have to buy anything, but you will at least get advice :)

Funny that several of you mentioned SmartPak because right after I posted this I went on their site and filled in a form to be contacted by a Specialist there about this! But I'm on lunch break now and am excited about learning what would be best for Sandie, so I think I'm just going to beat them to the punch and give THEM a call now!

Well first of all, I just want to say that the SmartPak people are SO nice!! This girl talked to me for a long time about Sandie, what she eats, how much pasture time she has, what we do, etc. and came up with the following...

Right now, she is already on this hoof supplement...


It has 140mg of Biotin, so she's already getting a lot of biotin there...so for now, she recommended I start her on this along with it...
