So apparently my new mare had a few "herd" issues overnight on Friday. She has a small flesh wound on the inside of her hiney...no big deal. It looks like a kick. Its not deep and is just a superficial wound. I washed it out really good and put some antiseptic spray on it. It looks to be healing fine so far.
However on the opposite leg it also looks like she had a little bit of a kicking fit herself. She has a small spot on the backside of the pastern (maybe dime size at the biggest) and her heel looks to be bruised with a slight cut (its not an open wound, but it looks beat up a little). Whats worrying me is that her leg is quite swollen still (well as of last night). Initially I thought that the swelling was just from the concussion from the kicks. But its not really going down. Shouldnt the swelling subside after 2 days?
I have checked the area on the pastern and the heel and they do NOT seem to be infected at all and there is no heat in the swelling really...
I have made sure that there is no scab and have cleaned and treated the areas every day.
Should I be hosing the swelling?? She isnt really lame just walking around and I havent done any work with her since discovery of the injuries. She is stalled at night with turn out during the day. I really didnt want to keep her stalled all the time thinking this would only increase the swelling.
