    Swollen eye

I noticed last night that my mare's left eye would not open more than a slit. It seems a little swollen and she kept wanting to rub it on my arm. I've had my horses for a little over a year and have not had to deal with hardly any health issues, so I'm wondering if this is something I should call the vet for right away or just keep an eye on. Is there something I can do myself?

She may have scratched her eye and yes, getting the vet is a good idea.

There could also be a foreign object up under the lid. Best to have a vet out before it gets worse.

I'm going to give a third vote to "call the vet".

It could simply be a bad allergic reaction to the eyelids, or it could be a corneal abrasion, or a foreign body, or an eye infection, or who knows what.

Vet , my mares eye was swollen in the summer and was runny vet said "her eye looks grossly normal" she had a ulcer size of a crumb. Longer you wait more chance horse could be permanently blind or need surgery! :)

I doubt it is this since summer and fall are almost over, but I know my horse's eye will swell up if the flies are bad. He gets horrible fly bites and his eyelid will swell and he will try to rub it on anything. My solution is a fly mask, which usually prevents most reactions.

The vet told me to take the saline stuff I had when I had a scratch in my eye and to use it on my horse's eye. He didn't like it much, but it worked very well.

But yes, call the vet just to make sure it isn't terribly serious.
