Teeth: Floating

Just wondering what your experiences were with having your horses teeth floated? When do you have it done (once a year, twice)? Does your horse need to be drugged for the lack of better spelling? How do they react?

When I got my mare a couple years ago and wasn't well taken care of so I had it done. When the vet comes he checks her teeth (or shoves his hand in her mouth) but in two years he hasn't had to float them? Is that normal? when she did have it done I just held the lead rope and he filed them down. She didn't even bat an eye lash after she realize it didn't hurt. Mooney just kept any eye on me as I stratched her withers and talking to her. Is that normal? The vet sayed that was the easy job he's done (mind you there is some really bad horses around).

So whats your experiences like?

How old is this horse? Normally its once a year. Sometimes you can get away with every two years, but it depends on the horse and how it uses its mouth. The vet puts his hand in the mouth to feel for sharp points. My mare has to be put under alittle. Depends on the horse.

two years is about normal for my horse. According to what I've heard, if they are fed mainly just hay, it helps grind down the teeth more than grain, but I don't know how much.

It really depends on the horse but I have teeth checked once a year.

I have had his done with a power float and he was put under, and with a manual float where I just held his lead rope and he stood fine.
