Ticks?

I'm have some real issues with Dillon. He always seems to get ticks! No other horses get them, but, come early spring he is always loaded with them. I have no idea why and I even figured I would try to get a jump start on it this year and powder him before hand. Well guess what? He has ticks once again. Has any one heard of another treatment other than powder?

Lots of the fly sprays are also effective against ticks, the pyrethrin and permethrine based ones. Ivermectin dewormer (given to deworm--you don't have to do anything special with it) will also kill ticks.

Since he has such a tick issue, you might want to consider getting Frontline spray for him as it lasts a bit longer than other sprays and will keep ticks off.

I would use the tick powder and also give him an iodine bath. This way it will kill most of the ticks and other bacteria that are living on him. If you find one, especially on or near his dock/rectum, take tweezers and pull ALL of the tick off and then drop in rubbing alchohol.

Ive never heard of frontline spray or frontline for horses, but if they have it (like Ryle said) i would def. get it.

I'm surprised! I would have thought that the ticks were'nt quite out yet because of the cold in Alberta. I know that we never have any problems with them until about Mayish...

Iodine baths are your friend :D
Someone also told me that if you spray some of that liniment stuff on their bellies, it helps ward off ticks because the smell of alcohol is so thick...

We have a big tick problem. I am actually thinking of getting Guine Hens (sp)?to eat the ticks. I would love to know the answer. I picked sooo many ticks off my kids dog and horses last year it was terrible.....
Ughhh it makes me think of how gross they are.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

Ryle, I dewormed him with Ivermectin deworming about 10-8 weeks ago. (He didn't have ticks then) Since he now has ticks does this mean that the deworming is not working on him correctly? Should I try another type of dewormer or deworming program on him? None of the other horses have ticks with, even the ones he was penned with.

I will definatly look into getting some Frontline Spray! Thanks for all the information! :D

Interesting that he's the only one who has them. I use a flea/tick spray and wipe it around the sensitive areas with a cloth. Do ears, manes, elbows, under tail, neither regions. My horses live in the woods half the time and we are overrun with the dang things.

Maybe he attracts all the ticks so there aren't any left to get on the other animals....

Haha okay I was being funny but I was only partially joking. It's possible that his blood is "sweeter" and therefore more attractive. I think that happens right?

I have not had a problem with ticks which is surprising. Do you routinely rotate dewormers? If not, they may have become immune to the one they were using. Country supply has this great pack thing you can buy and it comes with different dewormers for every time you are supposed to rotate, and with a chart to keep track!

We don't normally have much of a tick problem (not many trees) but a friend of mine swears by the spot on stuff for horses. I think its called Equi-spot?...
yes thats it, heres a picture

it goes on like frontline or biospot

Thanks for even more information! I did get a spray today (that was all that my tack shop had) so we will see if that gets rid of them. I rotate my dewormers everytime I do them. I did deworm him again today with a different dewormer, we will see if that gets rid of those dang ticks!!
