Tongue lolling out of mouth

My 17 yr old Stock Horse x has been lolling his tongue out of his mouth when I ride. Help please?

"Lolling" seems like he isn't purposefully doing it, but before I continue, could you clarify? For example, I have also worked (and owned) horses that push their tongue out as a stress reliever (ASBs). Let me know! :)

My 4 year old mare was doing that as well. In my situation she was uncomfortable in a snaffle bit. She has a small mouth and she was miserable. To relieve the tongue pressure she would stick her tongue out.
I ended up switching bit and after a few rides, she stopped doing it.

Yep, I second this. My horse had been in a single snaffle and then one day, started sticking his tongue out of his mouth. Moved to a different bit and it stopped immediately.

I invite you to join BSMS and myself and begin your own bit museum. (This is what you will end up with after buying several varieties to determine what will actually please your horse.)

What kind of bit did you move onto? I currently have a snaffle.

I bought a Myler Comfort Snaffle, level 1. It's been such a good change. You could also try a French link. Those are comfy for many.

Sam works well with a solid bit. If you are riding English or want to direct rein, you can look at Kimberwicks. Another member hooked me on this bit. You can find a solid curb Kimberwick with 2 slots for the reins. The bottom slot is more curb action (this bit does have a curb chain) and the top slot is more direct reining.

We are not competing where I have to worry about the style bit I use. I used to ride western with a curb and 5" shank. My horse did very well in that bit and was neck reining. I've switched disciplines and drank the 'dressage kool-aid' and he is coming along with me kicking and screaming.

Can you borrow a solid low ported bit to see what happens?
