treatment for girth gall

My pony is 14.1hh, 3/4 arabian x draft and has been doing occasional eventing lately, hacks and show jumping later this year. She developed a girth gall that has not gone away- i rode her bareback only for about 3 weeks (which helped a little) and then/now using a woolen girth cover, but it does not seem to be helping at all - ripping the scab off raw again. I am looking to do a showX event in a week (i know it needs time to heal, but i dont have the time exactly just now) and was looking for a good wound cream to use before/during/after the show. As for not making it worse before the show, i will be riding bareback to give it as much time as i can give to breathe a bit and heal. Please help-this has been going on for what seems like forever!

I use the generic, store brand diaper rash cream. On a gall- prone horse, I apply it every time I ride. I always use it on an endurance ride, just to prevent any problems.

And on my more sensitive horses, the fuzzy stuff made it worse! I always use a mohair string girth fo that reason.

No specific ointment advice (I'd use whatever you use for other wounds), but aside from getting it to heal my advice for the future is ONLY "fuzzy" girths (some are better than others, or a non fuzzy one that works perfectly for your horse is sometimes better but may be trickier to find) and also ALWAYS stretch out the legs before you ride. I always do that with a horse prone to rubs and it really does the trick.

I have mules and my experience is once galled (and healed) if the girth isn't moved back, the mule will always gall again in exactly the same place despite type of girth or saddle. I have had bad experience with neoprene girths so now I always use a string or a wool girth. I center fire my mules so that the girth stays away from the elbows no matter the type of riding I am doing ( usually pretty extreme). I do like the diaper rash cream idea, I had never heard of that before.
