Trouble breathing while lying down?

My 1 and 1/2 yr old gelding very often lies down in the pasture.
While he is lying down, his breathing changes.
It slows and is heavier and it seems like it takes great effort for every breath. Each breath takes twice as long as it should.
He also grunts/groans softly. His nostrils flare a bit too.
It doesn't seem to bother him at all but it bothers me lol
Any ideas why?

Thanks!

I always thought it was pretty typical.
Think of all that weight on his lungs and other organs
