I just got 2 new horses from a rescue one is almost 1 and the other is 17 mo old they are both a little on the thin side right now all they are getting is grass hay what kind of grain should they be on? how much can they get. They get exersize everyday so they wont be getting fat
Well basically they need a endless supply of forage, example grassy hay all the time. As they are only little, i would reckonmend "Breed n Grow" its Barastoc product and im not sure if they send it overseas (from Australia). But yeh basically anything for young growing horses, that should have the balanced minerals, vitiums etc in it. And enough for them to gain weight. Make sure there wormed etc.
Ofcourse it will, he wont mature to his maxium height, he wont fill out... there are alot of negatives associated with neglect and under malnurised... esp when growing.
provide him with the best possible care from here on in.. that means the correct nutrition (consult your vet for this one), veterinary care and farrier care.
I'm not that sure about that. My 1st one came like that (she was stall kept for year and no good baby food really). I got her at 19 months old being really tiny and the owner of the farm I board her for the 1st month was very nasty telling me if she'll reach 14'2'' ever. She is 14'3'' and wide now (all measurements gave she should end up no more than 14'3''). However 3 other horses being with her in same conditions (same age) got out of situation at 2.5 - 3 years old and they are really small comparable to her (although she was only 3rd in size out of all of them).
hes about 13.2 hands and will be one in april and is a tb is that about right or is he little thanks so much for all ur guys help not only is this my first time with rescues its also my first time with babys
OK. Mine was 13'1'' if even that tall at 20 months old. By now (she's coming 4 years old) she's 14'3''. I didn't feed her with any extra to make her grow. Just grain (3/4 scoop twice day then reduced as long as she picked up weight), unlimited hay, and let her grazing for 30 mins a day when Spring came (I got her in Jan). She's foundation qh, so shouldn't be tall anyway, but she grow A LOT by 2 years old (gave almost hand).
