It’s been a week and five days since my mare and I fell. I figured it was time for an update. I’m going to try to update somewhere between every week and a half to two weeks.

Anyway, she’s doing a lot better. The place above her eye is pretty much bald... I’m hoping the hair grows back. Her knee isn’t swollen at all anymore, and her neck... the swelling in it went down completely a few days ago.

Her chest is healing really well, too... the swelling is down to a bare minimum and there’s only very little heat in it... However, it’s trying to heal, but she keeps messing it up. Every time a scab forms over the wound, she rips it off. I know that it’s probably itching, but if she keeps ripping the scabs that do form off, how will it ever heal? What can I do to keep her from ripping the scab off? I can’t put her up in the barn, and I can’t ‘bandage’ the area... She’s out loose in a 15 acre pasture with two other horses (my three year old Walker, Dakota and my cousin’s thirty-five year old Mustang, Diablo).

Is there anything I can do?

Oh, and as for me... I’m still finding bruises... lol. I’m fine, though... where I got ‘road rash’ on my shoulder is almost completely healed (just got a few ‘cat scratches’ left...) but it’s scarred over in very shiny, very apparent scars... hopefully they’ll fade. It’s odd that it scarred over, though, considering the cuts weren’t bad at all... Lol. Oh well...

Looks great! This a link to my older guy's injury VERY GRAPHIC. It was similar to her chest wound but worse. Don't worry too much about the scabs. These types of wounds heal from the inside out. We didn't much of anything with George. If he got some junk in there I would spritz with a bit of water. You can see by looking at his pictures your girl is following the same healing stages.

Isn't it amazing the injuries that a horse can heal from?

    Yeah, it's amazing.

Maybe i'm just worrying too much. The vet said that if it scabs over on the inside, then it would be ok... just don't let it scab over on the outside.

When it made the scab, it's on the inside... and then she rips it off and it gets all raw and red and bleeds a little...

Wish she was 100 percent fine right now... but she seems to be milking the attention and affection she's been getting for all its worth... Lol...

I would say as long as she isn't swelling much, you should be okay. When she does rip the scabs off, it could be due to just movement, but I'd just make sure they are staying relatively clean. Hose it off if you have to if it gets gunky, but otherwise it looks like normal healing process to me.
