Question Using salt to de-ice around horses pen.

Hi, So it got really warm the past two days and then today it got cold so now there is a little bit of ice in my horses pen and I didn't know it it was safe to use salt that you use on your driveway to deice it or like using it around pets it it not safe on their feet? Or to eat, because my horse eats everything, lol.
Also if I can't use it what about he pet safe stuff they have in the pet section? I know its safe on their feet but what about eating it?
