Hey all,

I'm new to the boards, and new to the horse ownership world (but a 15 year horse care veteran, just purchased my first!!) Now my new horse partner is a 8 year old Thoroughbred. His owners don't know as much about him as I would like, as they only owned him for 6 mons and got him on a trade with no intention of keeping him. Now they say that his vaccines were all done in December (Core vaccines, plus strangles). However, they don't have his records. This makes me a little concerned. Am I right to be concerned? Whats the best way to proceed from here? They seem trust worthy enough, and the horse is well cared for and in good health.

Thanks for the advice!

In the past when I have acquired a newly purchased horse or one brought onto our property if the horse's vaccination history was unknown or uncertain I would and did go ahead and vaccinate the horse with our logistically recommended vaccinations. We never had a bad reaction or flare-up with any we've vaccinated with no known history or uncertain of being up-to-date on vaccinations.

I would tell them for sake of other horses health that if they cannot produce the proof that you will have to re-vaccinate. I think that is only fair and will be understood.
