Vitamins and Supplements

My horse has put on good weight since his last home. He is still under developed though. What are some good vitamins and supplements to give to him? He is ridden in the mountains 2-3 days a week to work on his muscle development, but I think he would benefit from extra vitamins. I'm not sure where to start. Thanks!!

Most horses will benefit for some type of vitamin and mineral supplement because we often don't replenish the minerals that we remove with the harvesting of the hay so over time, our hays are somewhat lacking in certain areas. What you need to add is however going to depend upon what you feed, both hay and concentrates, as well as any local deficiencies. Does he have anything going on skin or developement wise that you feel diet could address?

Hi is fed alfalfa cubes twice daily. I would like him to develop his topline and just general muscle mass. I have no idea how long he stood without being exercised and I know that he was very bony when he arrived at the boarding facility in November. He is coming along nicely and I would like to help him in whatever way possible. I don't want to give him anything that will create excess energy, just a little help to go along with his feed.

Only cubes? I don't want to come back as a horse in Nevada!

Cubes aren't normally made from high quality hay so I'd definitely be looking at some type of supplementation to round out his diet. The drying process is going to denature and speed up the degradation of the vitamins too. You can try ration balancers. You don't need the higher 30% variety (meaning it has 30% protein) because you're feeding alfalfa. Look for a 12%. It will give you something to start with. It's a concentrated source of vitamins and minerals that is only feed at a rate of 1-2# a day.

I know! Poor guy. That is the way they do it at the barn he's at. :(

Thank you for the advice. I truly appreciate it.
