Why are they recalling it?

I think some horses have gone into anaphalactic shock (sorry spelled it the best I could).

Mine have already gotten the shot, didn't have any issues that I noticed...

Yes we sent back all our vaccine from the clinic yesterday. Seems some horses are going into anaphylactic shock and die when they get the injection. So they have recalled the vaccine. If you horse already has been given the vaccine(like mine have been) and it didn't bother them immediately, then you shouldn't have any problems.
Scary for sure

Wow that is scary! Both my horses had WN shots last month too! Both were ok , it has been a few weeks...anything else I need to look for?

After talking to a few people today and posting on some other places, it seems there has been two deaths and a miscarriage traced to this stuff, several people have had no ill effects from it.

Let just pray those that have used it will have no problems with their Horses

I used some this year with no issues....

still probably better then Fort Dodge's 11% reaction rates when I researched it 4 years ago ...

Problems with anaphylaxis and vaccinations tend to be due to the adjuvent in the vaccine and are seen very rapidly after administration. If you have used this vaccine and not seen any ill effects yet, it is unlikely that you will. Thanks for posting this, had not heard about the recall yet myself!

It is just Previnile. Which is one of my favorite vaccines prior to the manufacturing issue of the current batches. The benefit of the vaccine was that it didn't use an adjuvant and did not cause any reactions. Out of the thousands of horses i have vaccinated with previnile, i have not seen a single adverse reaction. I hope they correct the issue because it was an excellent vaccine with a greater than 99% efficacy.

Just a side note riccilove, we led the nation in Washington last year for number of horse cases of west Nile and it's been on the rise the past 3 years in WA, where most other states have seen steady declines. I would make sure your horse is protected as I expect next year to be even worse in WA. with the mild winter we had, and the prevalence of mosquitoes thus far.

Thanks for answering my question! Good to know. They were definitely going to get vaccinated for West Nile, they were given a 5-way in November that included a West Nile vaccine so they are still techincally protected [Right? It's a year?] but I want them on a spring schedule so am doing it again soon. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't all West Nile vaccines, lol.

Horse died

I lost my horse after he was administered the Prevenile. It took 90 seconds from the time he was injected until he was dead on the ground. He had received Prevenile in 2009 with no apparent adverse affects. My other gelding was not affected by the vaccine. Even if the vet had been able to pull him thru the anaphylactic shock caused his small intesteine to twist 180 degrees. I would like to hear from anyone else who lost a horse or if you horse had a severe reaction to the prevenile: rlynnbrown@aol.com

Since this warning is a year old, I'm going to unstick it.
