weaing an putting weight on mare

We just moved baby over to wean both are doing well! When i bought mare she was under weight as it was the colt is in great shape. Should i take grain away from mom for a bit to help dry up? She has free hay and gets alfalfa hay 2x daily. I want to get her weight up in a safe way. Any suggestions? She is a 15yr old peruvian paso if that helps. Thanks
