weak back muscles.

My mare doesn't have much muscle in her back, like around her spine.
I have 2 things I do to make her flex, my old trainer showed them to me a while back.
I know to a lot of backing and collecting helps as well.
But I would like to know what you guys would do.

Thanks!

Run a pen across your horses tummy, from between her front legs, and right back- careful, she might kick! This makes them raise their back, and use their tummy muscles. I do this with diddly, and it does help. It also gives them a little feel of what they should be doing when working from behind :)

Thanks for that! I have actually tried that with a comb and I have never seen her raise up. Every other horse I have done it on will kind of raise up, but nor her. Does that mean it's not working?

Use the pen point (just don't draw on the horse!) and don't be afraid to push a little... Don't stab the horse or anything, but make her lift away from it. If she doesn't I would suspect it is painful for her to round her back, so she doesn't. If so, it would be time to call out a chiro. But as it is, it sounds like your being too gentle with them all. Toughen up!
