Weight Loss

Over the summer and fall months, alot of my horses suffered from a high infestation of parasites (pinworms).

What had happened was, we had an Ivermectin resistant worm. Unfortunately we didn't realize this, or figure out the problem until alot of the horses were down in weight. We knew something was wrong, we just didn't figure out what.

They have all since been dewormed several times, and it seems the problem has cleared up.

Now the problem is, getting the weight on during the cold winter months. Other than the weight problem, they are healthy. They eat well, have good teeth, get good quality hay and grain, and all have nice thick winter coats.

I have them all on beet pulp now along with their grain and hay, which I have increased. A couple of them are also on ground flax. And all of them are on a vitamin supplement.

Anything else I should do? I cannot afford free choice hay. They get three feeding per day.

you can add in some alfalfa pellets/cubes ... rice bran is another good thing that helps with weight gain

I have been called the NSC Nazi more then once ... I hate traditional feed methods of loading our horses up on grains and junk food :)

What kind of grain are you feeding? A lot of times it works better to cut out the grain and feed alfalfa pellets or mixed hay pellets instead, along with your vitamin supplement. Adding a probiotic like Source Focus WT might help too.

You can increase your flax to 8 oz (by weight) if it's ground/milled, 1 lb of it's whole.

The most cost effective weight gaining diet would be 3-5 lbs of alfalfa pellets (1.5 to 3 scoops, 2qt scoop), 1-2 lbs of whole oats (1/2 to 1 scoop), 1-2 cups of corn oil, and a vitamin supplement (no grain/feed).

Yeah...I'd say try some corn/vegitable oil. 1/2 cup in the AM, and another 1/2 in the PM. It should help, I've also heard that rice bran works as well.
